Nigerian man was in terror database
http://waronyou.com/topics/nigerian-man-was-in-terror-database/
A Nigerian man charged Saturday with attempting to blow up a U.S. airliner on Christmas Day was listed in a U.S. terrorism database after his father told State Department officials that he was worried about his son’s radical beliefs and extremist connections, officials said.
The suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was granted a two-year tourist visa by the U.S. Embassy in London in June 2008 and has traveled to the United States at least twice before, officials said. His name was added to a catch-all terrorism-related database last month, when his father reported concerns about his son’s “radicalization and associations” to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, a senior administration official said.
Abdulmutallab, 23, was subdued by passengers and crew members aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Friday after he ignited an explosive device that set his pants leg and part of the airplane, which was preparing to land in Detroit, on fire. The incident marks the latest apparent attempt by terrorists to bring down a U.S. aircraft through the use of an improvised weapon and set in motion a series of urgent security measures that disrupted global air travel during the frenetic holiday weekend.

Forgive the pun, but this would seem to be something of a no-brainer. Some old things, and some new things, I tried to pick out tracks that I know yall haven’t heard yet so there should be surprises around every turn. can’t believe i’ve been making tracks for over 10 years now..That said, there’s so much to learn still. Fractures in the Truth Movement, Part III The Fissure Becomes a Gulf

“Strange powers have our enemies, and strange weaknesses! But it has long been said: oft evil will shall evil mar.”
–J.R.R. Tolkien, from The Two Towers
“This fracture in the truth movement between the anti-zionists and the Alex Jones automatons was building gradually for a few years until [Jason] Bermas blew the issue wide open on Alex Jones’ show in April. Since then the fracture has become a fissure, and the fissure will soon become a gulf.“
–from Part 1 of “Fractures in the Truth Movement”
As covered in part 1 of this series, the split between anti-zionists and those who equate anti-zionism with anti-semitism was blown wide open last April by Jason Bermas of Loose Change fame, while guest-hosting the Alex Jones Show. He accomplished this by berating a caller who had the audacity to ask about Jewish control of the Hollywood media. This split widened to a fissure with the firing of Jeff Rense from GCN’s radio network, with Texe Marrs writing an article critical of Jason Bermas, and with Nathaniel Kapner opening the debate on whether Alex Jones is a zionist shill–or just a useful idiot.
Well, a new fissure has appeared between Alex Jones and those who honestly seek the truth in politics and history, which has been building gradually–along with the anti-zionist rift–since the PrisonPlanet.com forums were created in 2007. The two rifts, side by side, represent what has now become a gulf between the Alex Jones world and the rest of the war for truth and justice. As explained in Parts 1 and 2 of this series, when Alex Jones had the PrisonPlanet.tv forums deleted in a hissy fit live on air, it was just before this time that the PrisonPlanet.com forums were created. Because the members only .tv forums were un-moderated, Alex Jones equipped the new free forums at PrisonPlanet.com with moderators who would make Pol Pot flinch. These moderators have been suppressing the flow of information on PrisonPlanet.com’s forums ever since.
What information is there to suppress on an internet forum, you ask? It’s funny you should ask, because that’s one of the things I’d like to address. I made the case for anti-zionism in part 2 of this series, and it just so happens that this is one of the subjects under extreme scrutiny at PrisonPlanet.com. It seems Alex Jones has a reason to suppress any talk of Jews or zionism. I will leave it up to you to decide why that might be, although if you’ve been reading this series, I think I’ve made my opinion on the matter abundantly clear. When someone claims that Arabs own Hollywood, I have to sit back and smile at the sheer arrogance of the statement. Not to mention, my first thought is: “Who the hell is paying this guy to say that?” Yet Alex Jones has made this exact statement not once, but a number of times.
And how does one go about suppressing the flow of information on an internet forum? How do you go about the seedy business of appearing to be for truth and uncovering political crimes, while hiding and removing any trace of your own lies and crimes? It’s easier than you may think. People who are used to being lied to their entire lives sometimes have a hard time seeing through new lies, even if this is their main desire. But as with all lies, eventually the jig is up. A home built upon a foundation of lies is no home at all…
Following are four main tactics I have observed, which are used by internet forum moderators to suppress the free flow of information:
The first tactic is ridicule. Any idea outside of the accepted bubble must be ruthlessly vilified by both moderators and sycophantic registered users alike.
The second tactic is moving threads to “dunce” boards, which are basically forum boards where moderators can quarantine all “kooky” threads. This effectively quarantines the idea of the thread, along with the thread itself and the person who posted the thread. New users naturally shy away from these boards, not wishing to be outcasts. Included in this tactic is changing the title of threads to make the poster appear ignorant or even hateful, and merging “dunce” threads with other “dunce” threads in order to confuse the issues.
The third tactic is deleting posts and threads altogether… Forum posts which are critical of the moderators, or whose topics are taboo, can be simply deleted.
The fourth tactic is banning registered members from using and viewing the forums outright. The ban can be temporary or permanent. This is the tactic that appears to be the downfall of the PrisonPlanet.com forums.
PrisonPlanet.com’s forum moderators apply all of the above tactics to their forums with ruthless efficacy. Many users become disgusted by the blatant abuse of authority, and simply leave, not waiting to get banned or ridiculed. So some see the scam for what it is, and leave on their own terms. Others, as mentioned earlier, are too used to being manipulated to see through the charade.
There is an immediate danger the internet poses for the powers-that-be, and those powers have every motive–financial and political–to attempt to stifle dissent on the internet. It only makes sense considering the effort they’ve expended on suppressing truth through the mainstream media. They would be stupid to not attempt control of their opposition…

IEA says drill offshore and tax more
The US should consider new gasoline and diesel taxes and expand domestic oil and natural gas production to recently opened offshore areas to increase the nation's energy security, IEA chief economist Fatih Birol said today. The US government should consider taking advantage of falling oil prices by establishing taxes on fuel that would "lock in the efficiency gains that resulted from last year's price surge."
Birol also warned that along with falling demand, the economic slump could reduce energy investment too much and lead to another global spike in fuel prices in several years as the economy recovers.

Cramdown Shows How Congress (Still) Really Works
For a taste, here's what I mean:
Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who since 2007 had led unsuccessful efforts in Congress to give bankruptcy judges authority to modify home loans, dispatched his senior economic policy adviser, Brad J. McConnell, to talk with lobbyists for JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America. "Each agreed to take [the idea] back to their folks to see what they could do," says a person familiar with the talks...By the time McConnell talked to the JPMorgan and BofA representatives the next day, however, "they had gone on full defense mode and started to complain about how lousy a deal Citi had struck," says the person familiar with the exchanges. Bank opposition...
In the following weeks, banking lobbyists launched a renewed attack on the cramdown legislation, enlisting as an ally Republican Representative Lamar Smith of Texas, among others. Apart from Citi, "the industry remains united in that bankruptcy cramdown would destabilize the market" by creating widespread uncertainty about the value of numerous troubled mortgages, says Steve O'Connor, senior vice-president for government relations at the Mortgage Bankers Assn. His group is distributing talking points to key congressional aides laying out reasons why "Congress should defeat bankruptcy reform legislation."...
Industry lobbyists are organizing home state bankers to pressure moderate Democrats they hope will be receptive to limiting the kinds of loans eligible for cramdown. One target: Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana.
There's a lot in this passage - but I think the most important part is how lawmakers are still integrally involving corporate lobbyists in their legislative efforts to deal with the economic crisis. I don't mean to pick on Durbin - on this issue (and on many) he's been great. I mean to highlight the enduring corruption of the process itself.
It's stunning, really - these lobbyists represent the same corporations that ran the economy into the ground, and yet Congress still feels the need to ask their permission to go ahead with legislation to stop their most egregious practices.

Luxury goods: The lapse of luxury
Producers of luxury goods are suffering in the downturn
COULD those who produce luxury goods escape the worst of the global economic slump? Not likely. Some had dared to hope so, suggesting that rich consumers may be insulated from the financial turmoil that has engulfed those less well off, or that shoppers’ discretionary spending may go to acquiring fewer, better quality items. In fact practice suggests that the optimists have got it mostly wrong.
Revenue in the luxury-goods industry may fall by 3-7% this year according to Bain, a consulting firm. That could prove to be a conservative estimate, as the economic slowdown begins in earnest. Bad news is pouring in. Diamonds, a byword for luxury, are not forever. On Monday February 23rd De Beers, the leading diamond producer, admitted that operations have been suspended at Debswana, a joint venture with Botswana’s government that is the world’s biggest diamond producer. Other diamond miners are taking similar measures. Americans, who buy half the world’s diamonds, are resisting the lure of the sparkle, apparently foregoing fancy engagement rings for now. ...

A friendly visit
Barack Obama visits, Stephen Harper, Canada's prime minister
Barack Obama sets foot on foreign soil for the first time as president on February 19th, following the tradition of new US presidents meeting first with their neighbours to the north and south (he met with Mexico’s president a week before his inauguration). While battling the global economic crisis will be the prime topic of discussion, the two allies also will talk about some contentious trade issues, including the “Buy America” provisions in the new US stimulus package and Mr Obama’s position on the North American Free-Trade Agreement.
Both the US and Canada are in the midst of major economic downturns. While Canada went into the crisis with stronger fundamentals than the US—including years of fiscal surpluses and a much-stronger banking system—it will also be plunged into recession this year, in no small measure because of slumping demand in the US, by far its largest trading partner, as well as because of plummeting commodity prices. Around one-third of Canada’s GDP comes from exports to the US (it is the biggest exporter of oil and gas to its southern neighbour), yet US imports from Canada, at almost US$20bn in December, have fallen 36% since oil prices peaked in July. Other Canadian exporters, such as those in the automotive, lumber and furniture industries, are also suffering. ...

Former Felons May Regain Right to Vote in Countrys Strictest States
Weekly Voting Rights News Update
by Erin Ferns
Hundreds of thousands of former felons may regain their voting rights in two of the country's most restrictive states this year. As predicted last month, disenfranchisement reform is an election issue that is quietly gaining momentum as policymakers in Virginia and Kentucky battle for restoration of voting rights.
The two states are currently the only states in the nation that permanently disenfranchise all felony offenders. Virginia, however, has permitted certain former felons to apply for restoration, which then has to be approved by the governor, according to the Virginian Pilot last week. With less than 10,000 Virginians having regained voting rights under the last four governorships and at least 297,901 still disenfranchised, it appears more has to be done. But it appears this will not be accomplished without a fight.
Last week, the Virginia Senate passed one measure and defeated another that would restore voting rights, the Pilot reported. Constitutional amendment SJ 273, a measure that would give the General Assembly "constitutional power to restore voting rights to non-violent felons," is now in the House. However, an arguably more effective measure "that would automatically restore voting rights once a felon completes their sentence and subsequent parole or probation" died on a 19-19 vote. "Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, who presides in the Senate, broke the tie and voted against it."
Nationally, more than five million people are not allowed to vote as a result of a past felony conviction. Policies on felony re-enfranchisement among the 50 states are so inconsistent as to create confusion among, not only those former offenders who wish to regain the right to vote, but also the very officials charged with implementing the laws. Fair and consistent felony re-enfranchisement laws can contribute to the rehabilitation process, and reduce the harmful impact on low-income and minority communities where a disproportionately high number of individuals are disenfranchised due to felony convictions. With that, voting rights advocates are pushing for automatic post-incarceration restoration of voting rights, as we reported in last month's blog entry.
Under a system of automatic post-incarceration restoration of rights, "citizens released from prison would be immediately eligible to vote while on probation and parole, as are those who are sentenced to probation without serving any time in prison," according to a 2008 report by Erika Wood of the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. "These citizens would be permitted to register in precisely the same way as other eligible citizens, without submission of special paperwork.""Restoring the right to vote to ex-offenders is an integral aspect of reintegration into society," according to a 2007 Project Vote report, which notes a disproportionate over-representation of low-income and minority citizens in the criminal justice system. "Consistent policies are necessary to prevent large-scale disenfranchisement not only of the ex-offenders themselves, but also of the communities to which they belong. Society as a whole benefits when a representative government truly represents all its citizens."
While the Virginia bill has support from both parties, it "must travel a difficult path to become law," the Pilot reports. "The first step is being approved by the Republican-controlled House of Delegates that has already killed similar proposals this year."
Another fight is expected in Kentucky, where as many as 186,000 former felons may be able to vote again if House Bill 70 "gets the support it needs from lawmakers," according to local broadcast news outlet, WHAS 11. The bill would amend state law that permanently disenfranchises all felony offenders to restore voting rights after completion of sentence. The bill is now in the Senate.

Euro zone GDP dips 1.5%
Blue Dogs Say Helping Wall Street Is a Genuine National Emergency, But Helping Main Street Isnt
When I spoke to Cooper the week after the vote, he defended it as counterintuitively pro-Obama, cast against "certain Congressional old habits and bad practices. A lot of our colleagues have not gotten the change message." He expressed frustration with the speed of the process, as well as the fact that the leadership had forgone the normal committee mark-ups, saying that members were "just told how to vote."If that was the case, I asked Cooper, why had he voted for the Troubled Asset Relief Program little more than a week after Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson sent a three-page proposal up to the Hill asking for $700 billion? "We were told," he said, "and I believed at the time, that the TARP money was a genuine national emergency."
I mean, there's no other way to read this. Cooper is on the record saying he voted to hand $700 billion to Wall Street because it was required by a "genuine national emergency." But the stimulus bill that would start addressing the economic destruction happening all over the country? No, according to the Blue Dogs who voted against the stimulus, that crisis on Main Street isn't a "genuine national emergency."
Guess what? The financial industry is the second biggest donor to Jim Cooper over his career. What a shocker that he thinks wealthy Wall Street fat cats having to take slightly lower paychecks is a "genuine national emergency," but millions of Americans losing their jobs and wages isn't.

Are You an Unwitting Tax Cheat?
It's hard not to cringe at the thought of a run-in with the IRS. But as Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and the thousands of UBS customers who were allegedly sold into illegal tax shelters can attest, those run-ins -- whether prompted by an intentional cheat or an unintentional mistake on your taxes -- can occur all too easily.
“Our tax code is so complicated and convoluted that, in fact, it’s easy to make a mistake on your tax return, just because you don’t know what the law is,” says Jeff Schnepper, a tax attorney in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Of course, ignorance is no excuse. If the IRS finds a mistake on your return you’ll not only have to pay what you owe, but will be subject to interest and, possibly, penalties. And the responsibility for unpaid tax is yours, even if a professional prepared your return.
No matter who does your taxes, here are three questions to ask before you sign on the dotted line.
Did you report all your income?
Earned some extra cash from freelancing? Just because you didn’t get a 1099 form (businesses aren’t required to issue those if they paid you less than $600 in 2008) doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. Granted, the IRS won’t know about that income — that is, unless they audit the company or person who paid you, says Fred Daily, a tax attorney in St. Pete Beach, Fla. “I’ve had clients get caught up in an audit that way,” he says.
And don't forget any income you earned abroad. “As a general rule, U.S. citizens are required to pay taxes on all of their income, regardless of where it was earned,” says Mark Luscombe, principal analyst for the tax and accounting group at CCH, a tax and business law information provider. If you paid taxes to the country where the income was earned, you may be able to claim a foreign tax credit. For more information, read our story.
Did you take the right deductions?
Deductions get many taxpayers into trouble. “People tend to be too generous in their estimates of deductions,” says William Raabe, a tax professor at Ohio State University. Here are the trickiest ones.
* Meals and entertainment: If you took a client out to dinner and discussed business immediately before, after or during your meal, then generally, 50% of the bill is tax-deductible. But you must have a receipt for expenses of $75 or more, containing the name of the restaurant, location, the amount paid, the person you were with and the business discussion that occurred. For expenses under $75, you don’t need a receipt, but you must keep a diary with all of the above details.
* Business Travel: If you traveled within the U.S. for business, you may deduct 100% of the cost of getting and staying there (airfare, rental car or taxi, hotel). Personal expenses —say, a ticket to a museum — are not deductible. For international travel, you must generally allocate expenses based on the business and personal part of your trip, Luscombe explains. For details, read our story.
If you use your car for business travel, you may deduct the costs associated with it, or take the standard mileage deduction. But you have to keep a diary, including the origin, destination, miles driven and the business purpose of the trip.
* Home office: Just because you do a little work in your home doesn’t mean you can take a home office deduction. In fact, most people don’t qualify for this deduction because they need to use the space regularly and exclusively for business, explains Schnepper. If you use the home-office computer fro personal matters, the home-office deduction is disallowed.
* Charitable donations: It used to be that up to $250 in contributions could be claimed as a deduction without a receipt. However, starting in 2008, the IRS requires that filers provide receipts for all cash donations, even that $5 you gave to the Salvation Army bell ringer over the holidays.
Did you pay taxes for a household employee?
If you paid that person more than $1,600 in 2008, you’re supposed to pay the so-called Nanny Tax. Come tax time, the IRS should receive 15.3% of that person’s annual wages in the form of Social Security and Medicare taxes. (Whether you decide to withhold half of that from your employee’s salary or pay that yourself is your choice.) Use our worksheet to determine the tax due.
